Programme profile

This programme is designed to provide students who wish to pursue a professional career in an international environment an academic training in law without taking national legal system as the starting point. The focus will be on teaching international and European Union law on the basis of a more general understanding of what law is and how it functions, rather than on a detailed knowledge of a particular legal system. The basic aim is to provide the students with an understanding of the content and functioning of international and European law in the context of its development and application in an international public or private economic or policy-making environment.

Graduates of the programme will not qualify for legal professions within national legal systems, as this would require further extensive training in domestic law. The programme aims at academic training for careers in international companies, international organisations (governmental and non-governmental), diplomacy or academics

Year 1: Constitutional Law; Introduction to Dutch language & Culture; Introduction to Law & Legal Systems; Legal History; Legal Skills; Administrative Law 1; Criminal Law 1; Introduction to Economics; Introduction to International and European Law; Private Law 1

Year 2: Economics of International Trade; European Law 1; International Law; Law of International Organisations; Legal Writing ; Administrative Law 2; Criminal Law 2; European Law 2; Introduction to Political Science; Private Law 2 ; Research Project

Year 3: Semester Abroad; Civil Procedural Law; International Finance Option from: Decision-making in the European Union; Theory of International Relations; Introduction to Philosophy of Law; The Legal Heritage of Europe

Entry Requirements

3 A-levels and  3 GCSEs (Grades A-C), including Maths

Scottish Students are required to have a SQC with 2 Advanced Highers and at least 4 Highers. Subjects to include Maths.
